You will see examples of the carvings which are the the basis for the pattern, be able to examine pre-made tunics, and construct a pattern for your own Pictish tunic. This pattern is extremely fabric-conservative and is simple to sew but produces a wonderfully comfortable and stylish garment. The pattern is adaptable both to long unisex tunics or short men's tunics. Bring a measuring tape to the class, if possible. Join us for Part II to cut and construct a tunic based on your new pattern!
Period T-Tunic Part II : Cutting and Construction with Eithni ingen Talorgain
Using the pattern drafted in Part I, we will cut and at least begin constructing a Pictish tunic. If you wish to work on a tunic, please bring prewashed fabric, matching thread, scissors, pins, and a measuring tape. Limited sewing machines will be available, so bring one if you are able. Your fabric must be prewashed and should be twice as long (plus seam allowances) as you would like the final tunic to be (i.e. - if you want the dress to be 60" from shoulder to floor, bring fabric at least 125" long). If your shoulder-to-shoulder measurement is 21" or less, you can use either 45" or 60" wide fabric, if it is over 21" use 60" wide fabric. Contrasting fabric for trim is optional. Cottons, linens, and wools in solid or plaids are most appropriate for this pattern. Some fabric may be available for purchase and non-sewing observers are welcome.

Introduction to Cut-and-Thrust Swordplay (Rapier) with Kou Toshikage
Cut-and-Thrust Swordplay is a new style of rapier combat that replaces the sidesword experiment. This exciting style offers more opportunity for studying and practicing unarmored combat according to fighting manuals from the SCA time period. Come and find out what Cut-and-Thrust Swordplay is, what it is not, what you need to partake in this activity, and where you can find more information on historical combat that is applicable to Cut-and-Thrust Swordplay. Parts of the class will be a hands-on practicum in full rapier gear while other portions will not require armor. If time allows, we'll briefly look at the Bolognese School (comprised mostly of the Dardi tradition) as an example of how to start doing research in historical combat and applying it to cut-and-thrust swordplay.
Late Medieval Italian Wrestling and Dagger (Historical Combat A&S) with Kou Toshikage
Fiore de Liberi left three versions of a manuscript on a complete combat system that covers combat in a multitude of aspects, from the basics of no armor or weapons to being mounted, armed and armored. The foundations of the combative system are contained within the sections on wrestling and dagger. We'll look at these sections in the Pissani-Dossi and Getty manuscripts for an introduction to Fiore's amazing system.
